It's still really humid and hot here. We had a nice heavy shower yesterday but I haven't had chance to get to the plot apart from a quick visit on the way home the other afternoon. Things weren't as bad as I thought up there - parched but I had some tiny red tomatoes and a few beans. I've missed the last of the sweetpeas and these have not gone over so I will let them dry over the next week or so and collect the seed.
We are away in Mallorca for a week from Tuesday so I would like to get there tonight to just have a tidy up - hopefully now we've had the rain it won't be as sweaty and I can spend more than a few minutes there! I'm not sure whether I'm heading for the dreaded 'change' (at 41?!?!) but I've found this humidity and heat unbearable and I'm glowing more than I've ever noticed before! Oh errr!
Evening Update: Managed a trip to the plot this evening and it wasn't too sticky. I wanted to clear up a bit before going away for the week and managed to remove the heads of any weeds threatening to seed everywhere. I harvested a few runners and three small courgettes. I also had about 5 tomatoes and ate them there and then. I also spent some time witht he purple sprouting broc which had outgrown it's netting cloche. I removed the cloche and hung some envrionmesh over some poles to give them more room to grow. These PSB were originally going to be transplanted elsewhere but the hot weather beat me by baking the ground before I had chance to dig it over and transplant. I've therefore had to thin them out where they have grown and hope they will be ok. It means I have less plants but this first year is all about experimenting and learning. The sweetcorn is growing well - although not as big as others on the site. I think a lot of my smaller plants just go to show that the soil needs some nourishment over the winter - something it didn't get last year.
Anyway, aubergines are doing better now they are in the garden and away from the RSM. I think I might even have one or two flower set. The toms in the garden aren't ripening as quickly as the plot but then they aren't in such a sunny position. I still have some cabbage plants in modules waiting to go in but again the baked earth is preventing this at the moment. The pot of carrots on the patio are just about ready - I hope by the time we get back they will be a nice size.
Have a good week.
